Water is life. It flows within us, around us, and connects us to the vast web of existence. From the moment we are created, we are immersed in water, cradled in the protective waters of the womb. Even as we grow, water continues to shape our being—it pulses through our blood, moves with our lymphatic system, cushions us as cerebrospinal fluid, and releases through our tears.

We are water.

It’s no wonder this element holds such profound power and wisdom. Water teaches us about flow, adaptability, and the beauty of surrender. It nourishes, cleanses, and carries our prayers, making it sacred in countless traditions across the globe.

My recent sweat lodge experience brought me face-to-face with the transformative power of water. As part of my training to one day lead sweat lodges, Chief Francisco entrusted me to pour water during the second door of the ceremony. This is the round where we offer prayers for others, making it an incredible honor and responsibility. Pouring the water for the group meant I was holding space for everyone’s prayers and adding my own intentions for the collective.

That in itself felt like a stretch—was I doing enough to honor the sacredness of this ritual? But I decided to stretch even further and challenge myself by learning and singing a water song during this round. As the steam rose, carrying our prayers, I felt my voice falter, overwhelmed by emotion. Tears mixed with the sweat on my skin, and for a moment, I wanted to stop, to retreat into silence.

A part of me begged for someone else to step in, to save me from this discomfort. But no one did. The group held space for me instead, encouraging me without words to find my voice. And when I did, the freedom and empowerment I felt were beyond anything I can describe. It was a reminder that water is not only about flow—it’s about resilience, persistence, and the courage to move through whatever tries to hold us back.

If that wasn’t enough to push me out of my comfort zone, the ceremony was attended by two respected elders. Their presence added an extra layer of pressure, but it also made their kind and encouraging words afterward that much more meaningful. This experience deepened my connection to water and reminded me of its ability to hold space for all of our emotions, from joy to grief, from fear to triumph.

Water reflects, amplifies, and transforms. Researchers like Masaru Emoto and Veda Austin have explored this truth on a molecular level. Emoto’s work showed how water crystals respond to thoughts, emotions, and words—becoming intricate and beautiful with positivity and fracturing under negativity. Austin’s studies build on this, revealing how water holds memory and responds to intention, reminding us that water is not just a physical element but a deeply spiritual one.

When we consider that our bodies are made up of about 60% water, it’s clear how profoundly we are connected to this element. The energy we hold within us and around us matters—it impacts not only ourselves but the world around us.

This summer, I invite you to deepen your connection to water and the other elements at our Four Elements Alchemy Retreat: Awaken the Goddess Within in the mountains of Northern Georgia. Together, we’ll honor the teachings of water, earth, fire, and air through sacred practices, ceremonies, and moments of stillness in nature.

Let water remind you to flow. Let it cleanse and inspire you. Let it carry you back to your true essence.
